Vereinigung zur Förderung der Genomforschung (VFG)
The charitable society was founded in Vienna in 2000 to support genetic research and to encourage constructive dialogue between scientists and members of the public. The main activities are currently:
Pioneer Research The VFG conducts pioneer research at the Vienna Biocenter (VBC).
Lectures In pursuit of the society's goal to contribute to the public understanding of science in Austria, the VFG organises lectures by leading figures in genetic research. The VFG was co-sponsor of the conference, "EMBO Workshop, Genetics after the Genome", be held in the Abbey of St Thomas, Brno, 16-19 May 2002 the (www.univie.ac.at/brno2002).
Brno Initiative The aim of the Brno Initiative is to develop part of the Abbey where Gregor Mendel lived and worked as a center for scientific discovery, communication and education. The Trustees are Sir Paul Nurse, Prof. Emil Palecek, Sir Richard Sykes, Dr. James Watson and Prof. Charles Weissmann.
